The Kroks of the 90’s

It was a time of wonder, and a time of enchantment. A time for music, and a time for brotherhood. From Australia and Beijing to Salzburg, Sayn, and Sao Paolo, we united as brothers in song – taking to Sanders Theater, Bettle Chapel, and Carnegie Hall. At 12 Holyoke Street we arched up, standing in a semi circle beneath Teddy Roosevelt’s stuffed krokodiles. We’d lay down our backpacks, our textbooks, our social obligations and commitments. The sound of a pitch pipe, and we’d launch into music, 12 voices breaking into harmonic triads, rhythmic cadence, rising crescendos and careful diminuendos.

Through the classics tunes of the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s, we overcame our differences and sang for a common aim. 150 shows a year. 6 continents. Thousands of adoring fans. We learned the power of communication and cooperation. We learned what it meant to blend seamlessly, 12 separate voices locked in harmonic cohesion. With overtones swirling above our heads, we came to understand that nunc meant both “now” and “forever.” That our undergraduate spirits could etch eternity into Shades of Green, Cantabrigian Tales, 12 Holyoke Street and the 50th Anniversary. We were the last voices of our millennium – scholars and songsters.

In the years that have followed, the bond of song and brotherhood have only strengthened. We have celebrated each others’ weddings, asked our wives: “what’s your name?”, and as the decades passed, concretized who and what we are- the Kroks of the 1990’s. Nunc and forever.
